About the neighborhood

Winston-Salem's landmark neighborhoods: stone walls, old oaks, walking distance to Reynolda Village

Buena Vista and West End are Winston-Salem's landmark in-town neighborhoods. Buena Vista, developed in the 1920s and 30s between Reynolda Road and Country Club Road, is the city's most prestigious address — stone walls, old oaks and architect-designed homes a short walk from Reynolda Village, Reynolda Gardens and Wake Forest University. West End, closer to downtown, is the older streetcar suburb of Craftsman bungalows, Victorians and Foursquares around Hanes Park.

Together they offer the best walkability in the city: Reynolda Village shops and restaurants, Hanes Park and the West End's cafés, and downtown's Fourth Street dining five minutes away. R.J. Reynolds High and Wiley Middle are the schools of record, and the price range is wide — from West End cottages to Buena Vista estates well into seven figures.

Characteristics

Transportation

Five minutes to downtown and ten to Hanes Mall and I-40 via Silas Creek Parkway or Business 40. Reynolda Road and Stratford Road are the main corridors. The Strollway and Salem Creek greenways connect to downtown, and this is one of the few areas in the city where walking to a restaurant or a park is normal.

Services

Reynolda Village has shops, restaurants and the gardens; the Thruway Center and Stratford Road cover groceries and daily errands (Whole Foods, Harris Teeter, Trader Joe's). Hanes Park, Reynolda Gardens and the Wake Forest campus are the open spaces, and Novant's Forsyth Medical Center and Wake Forest Baptist are both close.

Character

Settled, cultured and leafy. These are the neighborhoods where Winston-Salem's history is visible on every block, with an active preservation culture, strong neighborhood associations and the arts scene of the School of the Arts and Reynolda House nearby. West End skews younger and more eclectic; Buena Vista more formal.
