Colfax is an unincorporated community on the western edge of Guilford County, between Greensboro and Kernersville, with Piedmont Triad International Airport right next door. It has its own ZIP code, 27235, but no town government — for homes outside any city limits, Guilford County handles zoning, permits and inspections. A Colfax mailing address does not always mean you are outside city limits, though: some 27235 parcels near Greensboro, High Point and Oak Ridge fall inside a municipality, which changes the tax rate and sometimes the utilities, so check the rate code on the county tax lookup for the exact parcel.

It is one of the few places near the airport where builders are still putting up new homes. In October 2026 NewHomeSource listed Westbrook Falls (True Homes), Northborough (Keystone Homes) and Dillon Ridge (Royal Homes) with Colfax addresses, starting in the mid-$300s, alongside older homes on larger country lots — many on well and septic. Living this close to PTI cuts both ways, so visit any lot you are considering at a few different times of day and ask about airport noise and overlay disclosures.

Car-dependent, with some of the best highway access in the Triad: I-40 runs through Colfax and I-73 and the airport are minutes away. Builders put PTI about 11 minutes, Kernersville about 10, Greensboro about 19 and downtown Winston-Salem about 21 minutes from their communities. No public transit.

Day-to-day shopping is mostly a short drive away in Kernersville, Oak Ridge, northwest Greensboro or along Wendover Avenue. Big employers around the airport, including logistics and aviation companies, are close by for anyone who works at or near PTI.

Character

A mix of brand-new subdivisions and older homes on wooded or open lots, with a quieter, semi-rural feel once you are off the main roads. Popular with people who travel for work and with buyers who want a newer home between Greensboro and Winston-Salem.
