About the neighborhood

Restaurants, the Tanger Center, minor-league baseball and a growing greenway loop

Downtown Greensboro has turned into a real neighborhood over the last fifteen years. The Downtown Greenway now loops the core, the Tanger Center brought Broadway tours, First National Bank Field hosts the Grasshoppers, and South Elm Street and the South End have filled in with restaurants, breweries and new townhomes and condos.

Housing is a mix of loft conversions, new condo buildings, and the historic districts that ring the center — Fisher Park to the north, College Hill and Westerwood to the west, Southside and Aycock close in. Buyers are a blend of young professionals, downsizers and people who simply want to walk to dinner and the Saturday farmers market.

Characteristics

Transportation

The most walkable address in the Triad. The J. Douglas Galyon Depot is the Amtrak and GTA hub, the Downtown Greenway is a four-mile walking and cycling loop, and I-40, I-85 and the airport are 10 to 15 minutes by car. Parking decks are plentiful.

Services

Everything is on foot: the Elm Street restaurant and bar scene, Deep Roots Market, the Greensboro Farmers Curb Market, LeBauer and Center City parks, the Greensboro History Museum, Carolina Theatre and the central library. Full-size grocery and big-box shopping are a short drive toward Friendly Center or Wendover.

Character

Energetic and still changing. Street festivals, First Fridays, minor-league baseball and a growing greenway culture set the tone, and each surrounding historic district has its own personality — from the grand homes of Fisher Park to the bungalows of Westerwood and the rebuilt streets of Southside.
