About the neighborhood

Home of the High Point Market, High Point University, historic Emerywood and lake neighborhoods

High Point is the only city in North Carolina that sits in four counties — Guilford, Randolph, Davidson and Forsyth — so the county that assesses your home, the tax rate and sometimes the school system depend on exactly which street you buy on. It grew up at the highest point on the North Carolina Railroad in the 1850s, which is why it sits almost exactly between Greensboro and Winston-Salem today, and it is still best known for the High Point Market, the world's largest home-furnishings trade show, which fills the showrooms downtown every April and October.

Neighborhoods are close together but very different: Emerywood is the 1920s historic district near High Point Country Club; Uptowne and downtown are the walkable core next to the showrooms and the ballpark; Oak Hollow and Deep River have lake access and newer homes on the north side; and Florence, near the Randolph line, has newer construction. Per the Homes In Triad NC report for July 2026, the city's median sold price was $277,000 with about 46 days on market — one of the more affordable ways into the Triad.

Characteristics

Transportation

A crossroads city. I-74 and US-311 run west toward Winston-Salem (20 to 35 minutes), NC-68 and Eastchester Drive run north to I-40 and PTI Airport (most addresses are 12 to 18 miles from the terminal), and I-40 and US-29/70 handle the run into Greensboro (20 to 30 minutes off-peak). Downtown has Amtrak service and PART Express regional buses, including a route to Winston-Salem. During Market weeks in April and October, downtown traffic and parking tighten for a few days.

Services

The Palladium area on the north side has the big-box shopping and restaurants; downtown's Congdon Yards, Stock + Grain Assembly food hall and Truist Point ballpark have revived the core around the showrooms. Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist High Point Medical Center anchors healthcare. City Lake Park, Oak Hollow Lake and marina, and the Piedmont Environmental Center and Bicentennial Greenway cover the outdoors.

Character

More than a furniture town: High Point University has grown into a major employer and campus, and healthcare, logistics and design firms fill out the economy. Outside Market weeks it has an unhurried, small-city feel, with established in-town neighborhoods, lake neighborhoods on the north side and some of the Triad's best values for space and character.
