Boom town on I-40/85 with a charming downtown and a Tanger outlet

Mebane sits on I-40/85 halfway between Greensboro and Durham, and that location has made it one of the fastest-growing cities in North Carolina. Large master-planned communities have gone in on all sides of town over the last fifteen years, while the historic Clay Street downtown has filled with restaurants, shops and a brewery.

Buyers are mostly Triangle and Triad commuters looking for new construction at lower prices than Durham or Chapel Hill, plus a walkable downtown. The Tanger Outlets and the retail corridor at the interstate cover shopping; Eastern Alamance is the school of record on the Alamance side, with Orange County schools east of the line.

Direct access to I-40/85 and US-70; Durham and RTP are about 30 minutes, Greensboro 35, Chapel Hill 25. Downtown is walkable; the new subdivisions are car-based. Amtrak's Piedmont line stops in Burlington and Durham, not Mebane.
