About the neighborhood

Established suburban neighborhoods with mature trees, sidewalks and neighborhood pools

Northwest Greensboro is the part of the city most relocating families ask about first. It runs from the Friendly Center and Guilford College area out past Lake Brandt and Lake Jeanette toward Summerfield and Oak Ridge, and most of it feeds Northwest Guilford High School. The housing stock is mostly established suburban neighborhoods from the 1970s through the 2000s — brick ranches and two-stories on wooded lots, neighborhood pools and swim teams, and newer custom homes around the lakes.

Daily life is easy here: Friendly Center and the Shops at Friendly are the retail hub, Bur-Mil Park and the Lake Brandt greenways cover weekend outdoors, and both downtown Greensboro and PTI Airport are a short drive. It is a step more expensive than comparable homes elsewhere in the city, and that premium has held because the school zone and the lakes don't move.

Characteristics

Transportation

Almost everyone drives. Battleground Avenue, Lawndale Drive and New Garden Road are the main corridors, with Bryan Boulevard giving a fast run to PTI Airport and I-73. Downtown Greensboro is roughly 12 minutes; Winston-Salem about 30. GTA bus routes serve Battleground and Friendly Center but not most of the subdivisions.

Services

Friendly Center, the Shops at Friendly and the Battleground Avenue corridor cover groceries, restaurants and big-box shopping within a few minutes of any neighborhood. Harris Teeter, Fresh Market, Whole Foods and Costco are all in the area, and Cone Health's main campus is on the east edge.

Character

Quiet, family-oriented and green. Lots are larger than in central Greensboro, streets are tree-lined and many neighborhoods are built around a pool or a lake. Bur-Mil Park, Country Park and the Lake Brandt and Lake Townsend trails give it an outdoor identity unusual for a city neighborhood.
