About the neighborhood

Established subdivisions and larger lots next to historic Bethania

Pfafftown is the unincorporated community on Winston-Salem's northwest edge, named for Peter Pfaff, who bought land west of Muddy Creek in 1784. A 2001 effort to incorporate failed, and in 2006 much of the area was annexed by Winston-Salem or Lewisville — so a Pfafftown mailing address (ZIP 27040) can mean city limits, Lewisville town limits or unincorporated county. Check the jurisdiction on the county record before you compare taxes and services.

It is a quiet, wooded area of established subdivisions from the 1970s on, newer neighborhoods and homes on larger lots, with Reagan High School and Vienna Elementary in the community and the historic Moravian town of Bethania next door. Buyers come for space and a short drive into Winston-Salem without the density of the city.

Characteristics

Transportation

Car-based. Yadkinville Road runs through the community into Winston-Salem, NC-67 (Reynolda Road) bypasses it toward East Bend, and Transou Road and Lewisville-Vienna Road connect to Lewisville and Shallowford Road. Downtown Winston-Salem is about 15 to 20 minutes; Greensboro and PTI Airport are 40 to 45. No regular transit service.

Services

Day-to-day shopping is along Yadkinville Road and in Lewisville, with the larger stores on University Parkway and Hanes Mall a short drive away. Historic Bethania, Tanglewood Park in Clemmons and the Yadkin River are the nearby recreation and day-trip spots.

Character

Low-key and residential — wooded lots, cul-de-sacs and long-time owners, with newer subdivisions mixed in. It suits buyers who want the quiet of the county with Winston-Salem's jobs and hospitals close by.
