About the neighborhood

Farm-country town in Guilford's northwest corner with new communities and Belews Lake nearby

Stokesdale sits in the far northwest corner of Guilford County, where Guilford, Forsyth, Stokes and Rockingham counties meet. Incorporated in 1907, it was a small farm town for most of its history — about 5,900 people at the 2020 census — and it has become one of the busiest places in the county for new construction, with several large new-home communities, including Belews Ridge, going in over the last few years alongside established neighborhoods like Huntcliff and Dorsett Downs.

Per Triad MLS closed sales for the 12 months ending September 26, 2026, the median sale price in Stokesdale was $400,000, and more than half of what sold was brand new. That makes it the value play of the northwest ring — a newer home and a larger lot for less than Oak Ridge or Summerfield — with Belews Lake minutes away. Like the rest of the northwest, much of the town outside the new subdivisions is on well and septic.

Characteristics

Transportation

Car-dependent. NC-68 runs south through Oak Ridge to PTI Airport and I-40 (about 20 minutes to the terminal), US-158 runs east–west through town toward Summerfield and Walkertown. Downtown Greensboro is roughly 25 to 30 minutes and Winston-Salem about 25. No public transit.

Services

Everyday shopping is limited to a few local stores and restaurants in town, with full grocery and retail in Oak Ridge, Summerfield or northwest Greensboro 10 to 20 minutes away. Belews Lake is the big recreation draw.

Character

Rural and wide open, with farmland and long views between the new neighborhoods. The new communities bring sidewalks, pools and young families; the older parts of town keep the farm-country feel. Evenings are quiet and the night sky is dark.
